Chesterton Softball rolls to 12-1 victory

The Chesterton softball team kept the bats going Tuesday night in a 12-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Merrillville.

Maddie Snemis started the game with a walk and scored on Cassidy Grimmís triple. When Hailey Johansen grounded out, Grimms cored for a 2-0 lead.

Marney Sisson singled, was replaced by courtesy runner Maddy Hamady, who then scored on Kari LaFreniereís two-run home run for a 4-0 lead just one-half inning into the game.

The Trojans added a run in the second when Faith Matta beat out an infield single and moved all the way to third on an error. Biz Zehnerís squeeze bunt scored Matta.

After Merrillville hit a solo home run in the second, the Trojans added five more runs in the fourth as Matta started things by reaching on an error.

Zehner singled and Shelby Grimmís sacrifice bunt was followed by a walk to Maddie Snemis to load the bases. Matta beat the throw home on a ground ball off the bat of Cassidy Grimm.

Sisson reached on an error that scored all three runners. Hamady, a courtesy runner, scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-1.

The final touches came in the fifth when Matta doubled and Shelby Grimm was hit by a pitch. Matta would score on an RBI ground out by Snemis.

Shelby Grimm set the final score by crossing home plate on a wild pitch.

In the pitcherís circle, Hayley Edmonds got the win after working five innings and striking out five.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they host Michigan City beginning at 4:30 p.m.
