The Chesterton softball team pounded out 12 hits and cruised to an 8-1 victory over Highland on Friday.

“After the tough road through the conference season, we decided to give several of the starters a rest and give the other girls another start,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “They all did a great job.”

The Trojans started things off right away as Megan Matheny reached on a two-out error and Sydney Cooley blasted a two-run home run.

The scoring continued in the second as Bailey Slivka doubled and scored on Alexis King’s single.

“Alexis King hit the ball exceptionally well tonight,” Hopson said.

Chesterton pushed the lead to 6-0 in the third as Cooley reached on a fielder’s choice. Megan Tymorek walked and Cooley scored on King’s single. Pinch-runner Allena McElfresh scored on a wild pitch and Slivka scored on a single from Sarah Richards.

After Highland scored a run in the top of the fourth, Cooley answered by singling and eventually scoring on a throwing error.

The Trojans set the final score in the sixth as Tymorek singled. Pinch-runner McElfresh scored when King reached on an error.

Cooley got the win in the circle for the Trojans by allowing just two hits and striking out 10, including seven in a row.

“Sydney threw a nice game,” Hopson said. “She didn’t give up a run until the fourth and at one point struck out seven straight. Really a nice game.”
