Chesterton Softball gets DAC shutout win at Portage

The Chesterton softball team scored two quick runs and cruised to a 6-0 Duneland Athletic Conference shutout victory at Portage on Thursday.

Maddie Snemis opened the game with a single and Cassidy Grimm promptly doubled. Lexi Benkoís sacrifice fly scored Snemis for a 1-0 lead. Micaela Iacovettiís sac fly plated Grimm.

Still rolling offensively in the second inning, Kaitlyn Carr homered to lead off the frame. Marney Sisson followed with a single and went to second on a fielderís choice.

After moving to third, Grimm singled home Sisson for a 4-0 lead.

Insurance runs for Chesterton came in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Faith Matta that scored Jenna Vagner and in the seventh when Benko scored on a ground out by Vagner.

Offensively, Grimm (2 doubles) led the way with three hits, while Lauren Kobialka and Carr (home run) each had two hits. Snemis, Benko, Iacovetti and Sisson all had singles in the win.

In the circle, Kobialka got the win with 2 2/3 innings of work (5 strikeouts). Benko worked 2 1/3 innings of relief (4 strikeouts) and Carr finished the final two innings (1 strikeout).

Chesterton returns to the field tonight when they host Highland beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Chesterton junior varsity lost in the bottom of the seventh, 3-2, at Portage on Thursday.
Offensively, Katie Hansen led the Trojans with two hits and two RBIís, while Peyton Hasselberger also collected a hit.

Hannah Massey struck out 14 in the pitcherís circle.
