The Chesterton softball team jumped on top of LaPorte early and rolled to a 7-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory on Friday.

“We have been working on trying to get some of the girls to be a little less ‘free swinging’ at the plate and step into the box with a purpose or plan in mind,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “I thought for the most part tonight we did that well.”

LaPorte scored the game’s first run right away as the leadoff hitter reached and advanced to second on an error. A sacrifice bunt and an RBI single made the score 1-0.

The Trojans answered immediately as they got hot with the bats in the bottom of the first.

Megan Tymorek started things with a single and was replaced by courtesy runner Alexa Olson. Sammie Howard’s sacrifice bunt was botched and both runners were safe at second and third. Megan Matheny’s double scored both.

Matheny went to third on Jill Bohnert’s ground out and scored on Mallory McKee’s single. McKee scored on a two-run home run by Sarah Richards.

“Our bats were much more productive even when we didn't score,” Hopson said. “It was nice to see a few more walks, good sacrifices, hitting behind runners, etc.”

Things kept going in the bottom of the second as Tymorek drew a leadoff walk. Olson again replaced Tymorek and Howard reached on a bunt. Matheny’s second double of the day plated both.

That was all the runs Tymorek would need as she struck out 10 in going the distance for the win.

“Megan (Tymorek) had another great day on the mound and Megan Matheny had a nice day at the plate,” Hopson said. “We had a couple of defensive miscues, but didn’t allow ourselves to get buried by them.”
