Chesterton Softball finishes up win over Hobart

Back To Front Page

If only every game could start for Chesterton like Tuesday's Class 4A Merrillville Sectional.

Up 3-0 over Hobart after four innings when heavy rains postponed play Monday, the Trojans returned 23 or so hours later to easily close out the Brickies in the opening-round game.

"Years ago, I remember we had to come back and finish the last half inning. We were up like eight or nine," Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. "(Monday,) we were sleepwalking. It's raining on the way over, the windshield wipers are going, we're thinking we're not going to play. I don't blame them. If it were at our place, we would've tried to have played, too."

Lexi Benko took over for Lauren Anderson, who threw four no-hit, no-run innings Monday, allowing a single and striking out three in the 10 batters she faced.

"We just came out fresh, acting like it was a new game," Benko said. "I went out with the mentality that it was 0-0."

Save for the base hit, Hobart (13-17) didn't get the ball out of the infield against Benko.

"She hit her targets pretty good," Hopson said. "You didn't see the catcher flying out. The hard part if she's wild is you can't position the defense."

While the Trojans didn't add to their run total, Hopson was actually more pleased with a more aggressive approach at the plate than the day before.

"I reminded them that offensively we have some of the best stats we've ever had," Hopson said. "We've been way too selective in what we're swinging at. You take a strike, it forces you to choose a pitch that's not too good. Some of them had more productive at-bats."

Shelby Grimm was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead Chesterton's eight-hit attack.

"They're a much improved team," Hopson said of the Brickies, who lost 12-2 to Chesterton in the season opener on March 27.

The Trojans (23-5) will face Portage, a winner over the host Pirates, in today's semifinals beginning at 4:30 p.m. Valparaiso and Michigan City meet in the other semifinal game.
