The Chesterton softball team saw its post-season run come to an end on Tuesday night.

Crown Point scored the game’s only two runs in the sixth inning and held on for a 2-0 victory in the IHSAA Regional championship.

“When you get to this point of the season, unfortunately someone has to win and someone has to lose,” first year Chesterton head coach Dan Lynch said. “I still firmly believe that Crown Point, Lake Central, Munster and us were right there together. Any one of us could have been celebrating over there right now.”

The Bulldogs had a runner on first with two outs in the sixth against Trojan starter Lexi Benko. A single by Mallory McMahon and a double to left by Maggie Ballentine provided the lead.

Benko allowed just six hits and struck out five on the night.

“Lexi did a great job for us tonight,” Lynch said. “She worked her way out of some big jams. They got the one big hit and that’s what it came down to.”

Crown Point had a runner on second base in the fourth when Benko snared a line drive up the middle and threw to second for a double play. In the fifth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases before Benko forced two ground balls to get out of the jam.

Again, in the seventh, CP loaded the bases and Benko induced a ground ball out to stop the threat.

“Defensively, we were good all year and we were again tonight,” Lynch said. “The girls are great athletes. We worked great together as a team and they function that way. This was a true team and you can see that in the dugout.”

Chesterton managed just four hits on the night, two by Kaitlyn Carr.

The Trojans’ best scoring chance came in the fifth against CP starter Brinkley Kita with two outs and runners on first and second. In the seventh, Carr led off with a single and moved to second, but was stranded there.

“Crown Point has excellent pitching,” Lynch said. “Kita kept us off balance. We were able to hit the ball some, but couldn’t get anything to drop when we needed it.”

The Trojans will lose seniors Benko, Marney Sisson and Noelle Michael to graduation.

“The three seniors did a great job all year,” Lynch said. “All three were great people on the field and in the dugout. Couldn’t have asked for anything else out of them.”
