Facing one of the area’s top teams to start the season isn’t easy.

The Chesterton softball team built an early 4-2 lead, but couldn’t hold on, and dropped the season-opener 5-4 at Lake Central.

“You could look at it and say what if,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “First game of the season, against a formidable opponent, and we had them on the ropes with a chance to win.”

Shelby Grimm led off the game with a walk and stole second. Biz Zehner doubled to plate Grimm ahead of Kristi Stevenson’s infield single. Lexi Benko doubled to score Zehner,

Lauren Anderson’s RBI ground out plated Stevenson for a 3-0 Trojan lead.

The Indians answered with two runs in the bottom of the first, including an unearned run.

Hayley McBride led off the top of the second with a double and scored when Zehner ripped a two-out single for a 4-2 lead.

Again Lake Central manufactured a run in the bottom of the inning with a single, bunt and RBI single.

“We went cold for a couple of innings,” Hopson said. “We had runners in scoring position, but couldn’t get them in.”

LC set the final score in the fourth inning when back-to-back one-out singles led to an RBI single.

Anderson worked all six innings in the pitching circle for the Trojans, striking out six and allowing nine hits.

Chesterton opens the home portion of the schedule today when they host Griffith beginning at 5 p.m.
