Chesterton Softball blasts Michigan City 16-0

Back To Front Page

It took a couple innings to get going, but once they did the Chesterton Trojans had little trouble.

Chesterton pounded out 13 hits and scored 16 runs to stop a four-game losing streak and pick up a 16-0 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Michigan City on Wednesday.

“It just feels good to get back in the win column after four losses,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “It was important to get a win and kind of get going again.”

Both teams failed to crack the scoreboard until the Trojans got going in the bottom of the third.

A one-out double by Shelby Grimm was followed by a two-run home run from Kristy Stevenson. Bailey Slivka restarted the rally with a double and Jordan Wadding singled. Jill Bohnert’s three-run home run made it 5-0.

Brittany Milzarek doubled and scored when Kari LaFreniere’s line drive to center field was misplayed.

“We weren’t taking strikes that’s for sure,” Hopson said. “I was much happier that we weren’t looking for the perfect pitch.”

Chesterton put the game away in the fourth when they sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs.

Grimm reached on an error and stole second. A double by Stevenson moved Grimm to third and she scored when Slivka beat out an infield hit. Emily Hamady reached on an error and plated Stevenson before Bohnert walked to load the bases.

Milzarek walked to score Slivka ahead of Hayley McBride’s two-run single to left field. LaFreniere’s fielders choice moved McBride to second and both advanced on a wild pitch. Becky Rizer’s single scored McBride.

Lia Lombardini’s single scored LaFreniere and Stevenson plated Rizer with a double. Natalie Anderson’s ground ball out scored Lombardini and Stevenson finished the scoring on a wild pitch.

Michigan City managed just three hits and all three were erased on double plays.

“Our defense has been pretty strong against kids trying to take extra bases,” Hopson said. “We got some outs on the base paths again tonight.”

Kelly Carr picked up the win by working four innings and striking out two. Lauren Anderson pitched the seventh inning and struck out two.

“Kelly did a nice job for us tonight,” Hopson said.
