The Chesterton softball team had little trouble in picking up an 18-0 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Merrillville on Wednesday.

The Trojans exploded offensively in the second inning as 14 hitters came to the plate and drew seven walks. Faith Matta and Maddie Snemis each tripled in the frame and Maddy Hamady had a pair of RBI’s.

In the third inning, eight hitters came to the plate for Chesterton and tallied four runs. Marney Sisson doubled and Kelly Carr singled home courtesy runner Kristy Stevenson. Johansen walked ahead of Cassidy Grimm’s two-run double.

“It was good to see the girls patient at the plate,” Chesterton’s LouAnn Hopson said. “Great to see some of the younger girls hit the ball hard.”

In the fourth, the Trojans finished the scoring by sending nine batters to the plate with Grimm and Carr each getting an RBI.

Lauren Anderson got the start in the circle and struck out three in two innings of work before giving way to Carr who pitched the final three innings and struck out five.

“Lauren and Kelly both had good outings,” Hopson said.
