Chesterton Softball blanks Hobart 1- 0 for Sectional title

The Chesterton softball team left little doubt.

The Trojans pounded out 16 hits and cruised to their third 10-run rule victory of the Sectional with a 10-0 shutout of Hobart in the Championship game on Thursday.

“It was amazing that we were able to get it done in five innings each game,” Chesterton coach Dan Lynch said. “That kept us from having to tax our pitchers too much.”

The Trojans got on the scoreboard right away as Maddie Snemis walked to lead off the bottom of the first. Cassidy Grimm singled on a bunt and both runners advanced on Lexi Benko’s fly out to center.

Micaela Iacovetti singled to score Snemis with the game’s opening run.

In the second inning, Marney Sisson reached on a fielder’s choice and the Trojans rallied with two outs. Snemis walked and Grimm doubled to left scoring Sisson and Snemis.

Benko’s single put runners on the corners ahead of Iacovetti’s RBI single. Gillian Price singled to plate Benko for a 5-0 lead.

“We talked all week about not overlooking anybody,” Lynch said. “We had to stay focused every day, stay aggressive and be do what we were capable of. I think we did that.”

Sisson homered with one out to start the scoring in the third. Snemis tripled to right field and Grimm followed with a double to center that scored Snemis.

Benko’s pop fly single to shallow right plated Grimm.

The lead grew to 9-0 when Price doubled and scored on Kaitlyn Carr’s single in the fourth. The final tally came in the fifth as Snemis doubled and scored when Grimm’s sacrifice bunt was misplayed.

Offensively, Grimm finished with three hits (3 RBI’s), while Snemis, Benko, Iacovetti (2 RBI’s), Price and Kobialka each added two hits.

Kobialka got the win in the pitcher’s circle with three innings of work and four strikeouts. Benko worked the final two frames and struck out two.

“Lauren did an excellent job. She only gave up one hit and went through 10 hitters,” Lynch said. “We wanted to use two pitchers and have one go through the lineup once and then make a change. It seemed to work well. It helped keep their hitters off balance.

“Maybe it’s something we continue to do.”

The Trojans will host the winner of the Lake Central-Crown Point game on Tuesday night in the IHSAA Regional at Chesterton. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
