The Chesterton softball blasted 12 hits and cruised to an 8-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Valparaiso on Thursday night.

“Offensively, we were much more patient with the bats,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We made the necessary adjustments much faster tonight.”

The Trojans blew open a scoreless game in the top of the third inning as Allena McElfresh led off the inning with a single. Mallory McKee singled and Alexa Olson reached on a fielder’s choice before Sydney Cooley scored McElfresh and McKee with a single.

Bailey Slivka reloaded the bases with a single ahead of Sierra LaFreniere’s RBI single that plated Olson. Sarah Richards scored Slivka and LaFreniere for a 5-0 lead.

Chesterton added another run in the fourth with back-to-back doubles by McKee and Cooley.

The lead grew to 8-0 in the sixth as McElfresh and McKee singled. After Olson sacrificed them up a base, McElfresh scored when Cooley reached on an error.

McKee scored on Slivka’s single to end the Trojans’ scoring barrage.

Valparaiso managed just three hits on the night against Chesterton starter Sydney Cooley. Cooley struck out 11 in getting the win.
