The Chesterton softball team traveled down Meridian Tuesday afternoon and came back with a 6-2 victory over Valparaiso.

The Trojans started the scoring in the second inning with Kari LaFreniere’s solo home run. Maddy Hamady followed that up with a lead-off homer in the third.

Shelby Grimm singled and moved to second on a ground out by Biz Zehner. After a wild pitch, Grimm scored on an RBI single from Lexi Benko.

Valparaiso plated its only two runs of the game in the third thanks to a walk, wild pitch and error against Trojan starter Hayley Edmonds. Edmonds worked two innings and struck out two.

“I thought Hayley did alright for her first start,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “She had a little trouble hitting her spots, but she now has the first start out of the way.”

Lexi Benko minimized the damage in relief and struck out one. Benko earned the win.

“Lexi came in with a runner on second and did what she is supposed to É get ground balls,” Hopson said.

Chesterton scored three runs in the fifth to set the final score as Zehner singled and scored on Kristi Stevenson’s two-run home run.

Benko singled and courtesy runner Faith Matta moved to second on a wild pitch and scored when Hailey Johansen reached on an error.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they host Merrillville beginning at 4:30 p.m.
