softball team picked up another Duneland Athletic Conference victory on
Friday with a 3-1 win over Portage.
“It was very hard
to hit after what we faced against Crown Point (Thursday),” Chesterton coach
LouAnn Hopson said. “We chased some stuff out of the zone and beat it into
the ground. Fortunately, the hits we did get produced runs.”
The Trojans opened
the scoring in the first as Shelby Grimm walked and stole second. A two-out
single by Lexi Benko plated Grimm.
The lead grew to
3-0 in the third as Maddy Hamady led off the inning with a home run. Grimm
reached on an error and scored on Benko’s second two-out single of the game.
“For the most part,
we are hitting the ball well,” Hopson said. “Now we need to work some on
better strike zone discipline and our situational hitting. I am very
confident that will improve.”
Portage’s lone run
came on a leadoff home run from Lexi Marquez in the fifth off of Benko. On
the night, Benko struck out four and scattered five hits in working seven
innings for the win.
“Lexi had a great
outing on the mound,” Hopson said. “Lots of ground balls and the infield
made some great plays. All four infielders made nice plays. Our defense is
improving every time out.”
The Trojans return
to the field on Tuesday when they travel to Michigan City for a 4:30 p.m.
“We have been
moving people around trying to find something that works best,” Hopson said.
“Right now, it is working well.”
