Chesterton Softball beats Portage

It took a little while Tuesday night, but they came around.

The Chesterton softball team picked up 12 hits and got a 9-4 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Portage.

“It took us a while to make the adjustments hitting,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “When we did, we hit the ball hard and forced some errors.”

Neither team cracked the scoreboard until Faith Matta led off the third with a single for Chesterton. Maddy Hamady put down a sacrifice bunt. Matta took advantage of an errant throw and came around to score for a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Lexi Benko started the frame with a home run. Biz Zehner reached on an error and moved all the way to third on a pair of wild pitches.

Kari LaFreniere’s double scored Zehner for a 3-0 lead.

Portage evened things up in the fourth as the Indians took advantage of a wild pitch by Benko, the CHS starter. After a two-out solo home run, Portage made it back-to-back bombs off the first pitch from reliever Lauren Anderson.

“The infield was really busy and did a nice job,” Hopson said. “We even turned a 6-4-3 double play.”

Chesterton answered right back as Hamady reached on an error and moved to second on Shelby Grimm’s sacrifice. Maddie Snemis plated her with a single.

An unearned run by the Indians cut the lead to 5-4, but they never got closer as the Trojans put three runs on the board in the sixth and two more in the seventh.

Cassidy Grimm led off the sixth with a double and LaFreniere singled. They both scored on wild pitches later in the inning. Matta reached on an error, stole second and scored on Shelby Grimm’s RBI single.

In the seventh, Cassidy Grimm singled and LaFreniere iced it with a two-run home run.

Anderson got the win in relief with 3.1 innings of work and three strikeouts. Benko went the first 3.2 innings and struck out one.

“Lexi did well,” Hopson said. “Portage hit a lot of stuff hard before the home run. Lauren gave up the home run and then settled down nicely.”

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they host Valparaiso beginning at 4:30 p.m.
