It’s going to be a crazy week thanks to mother nature, but the Chesterton
softball team got things started on the right foot.
The Trojans pounded out 10 hits and picked up an easy 7-1 Duneland Athletic
Conference victory over Merrillville on Monday.
And it didn’t take long.
Senior Heather Overla lined a pitch past Merrillville centerfielder Julie
Ross for an inside-the-park home run that got the Trojans off and running.
Sydney Cooley singled and eventually scored when Ryan Bozak reached on a
The game stayed 2-0 until the third inning when Bozak singled and moved to
second on a fielders choice by Megan Tymorek. Jeannette Sosnowski’s RBI
single made it 3-0.
“After we had a little success, we got a little too aggressive and couldn’t
wait on her to bring it back into the strike zone,” Chesterton coach LouAnn
In the fourth inning, Jaren Lynch started things with a walk and moved to
second on Overla’s sacrifice bunt. Cooley blasted a line drive home run over
the fence in straight away centerfield, her sixth of the season.
The home run gave freshman Cooley the CHS single-season home run record
which was previously held by Debbie Lange (5).
“She hit’s the ball hard,” Hopson said. “We’re working on her getting more
disciplined, but she does hammer the ball.”
The Trojans got an RBI single from Lynch in the fifth and that was more than
enough for Chesterton starter Taylor Harlow. Harlow allowed just two hits
and struck out six in picking up the win.
“I thought for most of the game, she really had pretty decent command,”
Hopson said. “They only hit a couple of balls hard against her.”
Chesterton returns to the field today as they host Portage in a game
scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
