Chesterton Softball beats Merrillville

The Chesterton softball team put four runs on the board in the first and sixth innings to pick up an 8-2 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Merrillville on Wednesday night.

Shelby Grimm opened the game with a double and scored when Kristi Stevenson followed with a triple. Bailey Slivka’s RBI single plated Stevenson.

Brittany Milzarek followed with a single and Slivka and Milzarek scored when Hailey Johansen reached on an error.

The Pirates cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third inning and it stayed that way until the Trojan bats came alive again in the sixth.

Britta Johnson drew a one-out walk to get the rally started ahead of a LaFreniere double. Johnson scored on Madeline Hamady’s single.

After Biz Zehner reached on a fielders choice, LaFreniere scored on a wild pitch and Hamady scored on a Grimm single. Zehner set the final score on a wild pitch.

Kelly Carr picked up the win after striking out two in four innings of work. Milzarek worked the final three innings for the save and struck out seven.

Milzarek also led the offense with three hits and Grimm added two hits.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 20, Merrillville 1

The Chesterton junior varsity had little trouble in picking up a 20-1 victory at Merrillville on Wednesday.

Lexi Benko and Hayley Edmonds led the offense with a pair of hits each, while Tessa Tilden added one hit.

Edmonds worked the first two innings and recorded five strikeouts for the Trojans and Rachel Stacy worked the final three frames (7 strikeouts).
