Chesterton Softball beats Merrillville 12-1

Back To Front Page

It took a little while to get the bats going, but when they did, the Chesterton softball team cruised to a 12-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Merrillville on Thursday.

I thought we were aggressive at the plate and almost over-aggressive a couple of times in some key spots,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said.

The Trojans scored right away in the first when Shelby Grimm singled with one out and stole second. Jordan Wadding’s RBI single made it 1-0.

After Merrillville tied the score in the top of the second, Lia Lombardini reached on an error to start the bottom half of the frame. Lombardini stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch.

Bailey Slivka doubled to start the third and Jordan Wadding reached on an infield single. Jill Bohnert’s sacrifice bunt moved runners to second and third. Lombardini’s two-run single made the score 4-1.

Chesterton exploded offensively in the fourth as Becky Rizer singled to start the rally. Kristy Stevenson followed with a two-run home run and Grimm doubled. Slivka singled and Wadding’s suicide squeeze plated Grimm.

A walk to Bohnert was followed by Emily Hamady’s line drive to center that was misplayed. Lombardini’s RBI single scored Slivka and Natalie Anderson reached on a fielder’s choice. Rizer reached on an infield error that plated Hamady and Lombardini for a 10-1 lead.

In the fifth, Grimm doubled and Slivka’s two-run home run to center field ended the game.

Brittany Milzarek worked the first two innings in the circle and struck out two before giving way to Lauren Anderson. Anderson struck out three as she retired all nine batters she faced.

I thought Lauren did a real nice job and Brittany did too considering she hasn’t pitched in a while,” Hopson said. “That’s two nights in a row at the varsity level and doing a good job for Lauren.”
