The Chesterton softball team picked up a 5-2 non-conference victory over Highland on Friday night.

The Trojans got on the board in the first inning as Maddie Snemis walked and scored when Kari LaFreniere reached on an error. Another Trojan run scored in the second when Hayley McBride doubled and eventually scored on Shelby Grimm’s sacrifice fly.

Two more runs for Chesterton in the third chased Highland starter Sydni Gizynski. Cassidy Grimm singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch to start the frame. She scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of Lexi Benko.

Hailey Johanson singled with two outs and moved to second on a wild pitch. Johanson scored on McBride’s second double of the night.

CHS’ final run came in the fifth on a solo home run by LaFreniere.

Highland’s only rally of the night off of Chesterton starter Lauren Anderson (5 K’s) came in the seventh. A leadoff double, a double steal and a Trojan error accounted for two runs.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they host Kankakee Valley with the first pitch scheduled for 4:45 p.m.
