Chesterton Gymnasts win CHS Invite title

The Chesterton gymnastics team may have gotten more than just a close win on Saturday.

The No. 1 ranked Trojans posted a 110.75 team score to edge Homestead (110.65) for the title in the CHS Invitational. Crown Point was third (108.05) with Michigan City (107.85) and Elkhart Central (107.70) rounding out the top five.

“This meet was a prep for the post-season as far as I’m concerned,” Chesterton coach Dawn Matthys said. “It was the first time some of our new kids have been in this type of atmosphere. Only four girls on each event and we threw three of them to the wolves today.

“We wanted them out there getting experience and know what it’s like to carry the team on their shoulders.”

Chesterton freshman Sophie Hunzelman won the All-Around title (37.80), while winning the bars (9.60) and floor (9.55).

“Sophie nailed her bars,” Matthys said. “A couple of the falls we had to count today I’m chalking up to our youth. They came from freshmen. We’re past the halfway point on our dual season. Today was a fun day and a chance to get out there and get experience.

“The noise level is bigger and so is some of the pressure.”

The Trojans started the meet hot with a solid rotation on vault. Chesterton posted a 28.4 score with the trio of Hunzelman (9.6), Jordan Bush (9.55) and Whitney Siewin (9.25)

“We’ve really been working on our vault and it showed today,” Matthys said.

On beam, Madeline Juestel’s return backed up Bush (9.4) and Hunzelman (9.05).

“Maddie Juestel’s beam routine was just beautiful,” Matthys said. “It’s nice having her back in there.”

On floor, freshman Alyssa Donovan came through with a 9.45.

“Alyssa came back and did a beautiful floor routine after struggling on the beam,” Matthys said. “She collected herself, came to the next event and shined.”

The Trojans return to competition on Tuesday when they host No. 2 ranked Valparaiso in the CHS Fieldhouse. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
