The top-ranked Chesterton gymnastics team continued its solid showing with a 112.575-108.45 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Crown Point on Thursday.

“I’m really happy with the way we performed tonight,” Chesterton coach Dawn Matthys said. “We were down a couple kids tonight and the kids that stepped in picked up right where they were supposed to.”

The Trojan started off the night with a 1-2-3 finish on vault as Mia Pak won with 9.475. Sophia Hunzelman (9.375) and Jordan Bush followed (9.25).

“We started on vault and it was pretty strong,” Matthys said. “Sophia threw a great vault and Mia’s was huge. We finished it up with Jordan and really went 3-for-3.”

The trend continued on bars as Pak won (9.65) with Bush finishing second (9.45). Brittney Troup was fourth (9.325) and Hunzelman was sixth (9.00).

“Bars was strong too,” Matthys said. “Brittney Troup had the bar routine of her life.”

The only trouble spot for the Trojans as a group came on the beam, but Bush took the individual title with a 9.475. Pak was fourth (9.05).

“On the beam, we have a lot of room to improve still,” Matthys said.

Chesterton returned to form on the floor and it came from the entire roster.

“On floor, our JV looked as good as our varsity,” Matthys said. “The entire team showed they can perform out there. That’s our depth coming through like we expect them to.”

Hunzelman won the floor with a 9.60, followed by Bush (9.55). Troup was fourth (9.45) and Pak was sixth (9.35).

Bush took the All-Around title (37.735) edging Pak (37.525). Hunzelman was third (36.90) and Troup was sixth (34.75).

“Jordan and Mia are really challenging each other,” Matthys said. “Brittney and Sophia are coming on too.”

The Trojans return to competition on Monday when they travel to Michigan City to take on the Wolves beginning at 6 p.m.
