Chesterton Girls Tennis outlasts Valpo

Back To Front Page

Olivia Vesling just kept battling.

The entire night came down on the shoulders of the sophomore and Vesling responded with a three-set victory to lift the Chesterton girls tennis team to a 3-2 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Valparaiso on Monday.

“I couldn’t be prouder of both the varsity and the JV,” Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “It’s been a couple of years since either one have beaten Valparaiso.”

Vesling won the opening set at No. 2 singles 6-3 over Valpo’s AK Flude. Flude answered back with a 6-4 win in the second set, but Vesling was too much down the stretch and won the third set 6-4.

“Olivia showed so much fight in a match that was both physically and mentally tough to come out on top of,” Bour said. “Those kind of wins can not only do good things for her going forward, but can also inspire the team the rest of the season.”

Hannah Nabhan got things going for the Trojans at No. 1 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Alexis Orlich, while the No. 2 doubles team of Megan Hill and Rachel Fredenburg beat Ainsley Grabarek and Grace Healy 6-2, 6-4.

Chesterton returns to the court tonight when they host Portage beginning at 4:15 p.m.
