As the number gets higher, sometimes you have to look for motivation.

The Chesterton girls swim team won its 18th consecutive Duneland Atheltic Conference title on Saturday at Lake Central.

“We wanted to try and have a good meet today and see where we stack up against the other conferences in the State,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “There was a new-ness to this meet today because we were in this beautiful new facility for the first time in a big meet. That helped get our kids a little more excited.

“We really performed today. We wanted to let it loose and kind of see where we were. I think this shows our kids the real potential that they have. You can tell them, but until they go out and show it to themselves, I’m not really sure they believe you.”

In a day full of sensational swims, the double Lauryn Kallay pulled off in a 10-minute span may have been tops.

Kallay led the Trojans to a 1-2-3 finish in the 500 Free (Amy Socha, Katie Craig) in a time of 4:59.10 and then anchored the victorious 200 Free Relay (Andrea Hanas, Cameron Klimczak, Abi Raines) to a come-from-behind win as they edged out Crown Point by .08 seconds.

“That’s so tough to do,” Kinel said. “That was a lifetime best split on the end of that relay. She’s tough.”

Kallay also won the 200 Free in 1:51.90 and was a part of the winning 400 Free Relay in 3:33.28 (Hanas, Jaclyn Klimczak, Socha).

The Trojans also finished 1-2-3 in the 100 Breaststroke led by Aubrey Wing’s victory in 1:05.70. Cameron Kleczka finished second and Jenn Gillen was third.

“Aubrey Wing had a great swim to win the breaststroke,” Kinel said. “All three of our breaststrokers were good.”

Jaclyn Klimczak led another 1-2-3 finish for the Trojans in the 100 Backstroke as she won in 56.85. Cara Kroeger was second and Caylee Casbon was third.

“Jaclyn Klimczak had huge time drops in her events,” Kinel said. “Caylee Casbon is getting back to her old self after breaking her ankle last year. That’s tough to come back from and you can see her getting back to her old form.

“It was fun having our kids racing each other in some spots.”

Hanas was the final individual champ for the Trojans with a victory in the 100 Free (52.66).

“Andrea Hanas got touched out in the 50 and went to work on a few things and really got better and better as the day went on,” Kinel said.

The Trojans also started the day with a victory in the 200 Medley Relay as the group of Jaclyn Klimczak, Gillen, Socha and Kroeger won in 1:46.09.

“We’re so deep that in some of our relays, there is real competition for those spots,” Kinel said. “We might have answered some of those questions today.”

Individual runner-ups for the Trojans included Jaclyn Klimczak (200 Free), Kroeger (200 IM), Hanas (50 Free) and Socha (100 Fly).

“Amy Socha had a great day with season bests in everything,” Kinel said.

Third place finishers were Cameron Klimczak (200 IM), Mackenzie Kirkham (100 Fly), Jadah Eshenaur (100 Free) and Piper Downing (Diving).

“Cameron Klimczak went crazy today with her swims,” Kinel said. “Jadah Eshenaur had two lifetime bests. Our divers did a great job today led by Piper getting third. Katie Craig was just awesome today too.”

The Trojans return to the pool on Tuesday when they host Portage beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“We expected to be good today and we’ve been working toward it,” Kinel said. “We had some really pleasant surprises.”
