The names may change, but the results never do.

For the 17th consecutive time, the Chesterton girls swim team left Crown Point High School Saturday with the Duneland Athletic Conference crown.

“It was a good meet for us,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “This is something we get up for because it’s basically the beginning of the post-season. The kids were ready and we had some great swims.”

Double individual event winners for the Trojans included Vanessa Krause in the 50 Free (23.64) and the 100 Fly (54.66) and Cara Kroeger in the 200 IM (2:06.39) and 100 Back (57.04).

Krause was named the Duneland Athletic Conference MVP.

“Our front-runners certainly stepped up with Vanessa winning all of her events and Cara was good today too,” Kinel said. “I think Cara needed to have a meet like this, so that’s good for her.”

Other individual event winners for Chesterton included Andrea Hanas in the 100 Free (53.43), Lauryn Kallay in the 500 Free (5:07.97) and Aubrey Wing in the 100 Breaststroke (1:07.14).

“Aubrey won the breaststroke and had a nice drop in the IM,” Kinel said.

The Trojans also won all three relays beginning with the group of Kroeger, Krause, Jenn Gillen and Andrea Hanas in the 200 Medley Relay (1:46.45).

In the 200 Free Relay, the quartet of Krause, Hanas, Kroeger and Kallay won in 1:36.92. In the 400 Free Relay, the group of Jaclyn Klimczak, Amy Socha, Kallay and Kelly Craig won in 3:35.49.

“Our relays were solid,” Kinel said. “We changed it up a little bit just to see what happens if we want to do anything different as things get going. I’m pretty happy with the way our depth keeps stepping up.”

Runner-up finishes for the Trojans came from Jaclyn Klimczak in the 100 Free (54.03) and the 100 Back (58.35), as well as Kelly Craig in the 200 Free (1:53.35) and the 100 Breaststroke (1:07.47).

Katie Craig also had a second place finish in the 500 Free (5:09.67) and Hanas was runner-up in the 50 Free (24.75).

“Jaclyn Klimczak in the backstroke dropped three seconds,” Kinel said. “Katie Craig had crazy swims in the IM and 500 (Free).”

Third place point scorers included Amy Socha in the 100 Fly (59.37) and the 500 Free (5:15.91), Katie Craig in the 200 IM (2:11.29), Lauryn Kallay in the 200 Free (1:55.29) and Piper Downing in Diving (341.30).

“There wasn’t a great atmosphere today, and because of that, I was pleased we swam to the level we did,” Kinel said. “From that standpoint, to get it done without a lot of excitement in the air was nice.”
