Chesterton girls soccer team wins Sectional Title, ends Valpo's season

Defense wins Championships.

The Chesterton girls soccer team proved the adage true again with a dominating 3-0 victory in the IHSA Sectional Championship against the host Valparaiso Vikings on Saturday.

“The old adage is that defense wins championships and we saw that on Saturday,” Chesterton coach Jason Conway said. “Our defenders are athletic and smart. When you put those things together, you’re going to have a good defense.”

The Trojans took a lead in the game’s eighth minute when Carley Perkins took a crossing pass from Molly Wilson and beat Valpo goalkeeper Madison Ochs. Desiree Bell made it 2-0 with a header off a pass from Courtney Krol.

“Nobody on this team has won a Sectional and that’s something they’ve had to live with,” Conway said. “They had two goals when the season started. One was to win the DAC, and that didn’t happen, and the second was to win the Sectional. They got it done and that makes everything that has happened this season worth it.”

Kayla Schneider set the final score with the Trojans’ last goal as they secured their first Sectional title since 2010.

The Trojans will face off against Munster on Wednesday in the IHSAA Valparaiso Regional. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
