The Chesterton girls basketball team got off to a fast start and never looked back in a dominating 75-33 victory over Munster on Friday night.

“We showed that we have 12 kids that can play,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “We played unselfishly and played hard. That’s what we are asking of them.”

The Trojans scored the game’s first 10 points, including five points from Shannon McCoy and three points from Courtney Krol. McCoy had a game-high 16 points and Krol added 14 points.

“We took the things we’ve done in the past and tried to speed things up some,” Campbell said. “We’ve got a lot of kids that have been playing basketball for us for quite awhile now. We have the personnel to do it.”

The lead would grow to 18-5 after one quarter and 36-15 at the halftime break.

“If we push the ball up the floor, and can do it without a bunch of turnovers, we should get a pretty good shot,” Campbell said. “It puts the other team in a predicament with getting back on defense. It should limit their offensive rebounding too.”

The Trojans hit on 27-of-58 shots (47 percent) from the field and were 16-of-24 from the foul line. Munster made just 13-of-43 shots (30 percent) from the floor.

“Our defense led into our offense tonight,” Campbell said. “We forced them to take tough, contested shots and then limited their second chances.”

Chesterton put the game away for good with a 14-0 run in the third quarter that included five points from Hailey Vale. Vale scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win.

“The ball has to get inside, whether it’s dumping it into the post or driving to the basket,” Campbell said. “That puts the defense in jeopardy and can create a chance to get to the foul line.”

Rounding out the scoring for the Trojans were Brittany Privett (7 points), Sydney Sisson (6 points), Marney Sisson (6 points), Sarah Dzierba (5 points), Annika Babcock (5 points), Maddie Scott (3 points) and Jenna Tarnowski (2 points).
