The Chesterton girls basketball team fought No. 2 Crown Point tooth and nail on Friday night, but fell 58-46 in the Sectional Semifinals at Portage.

“I’m really proud of our girls,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “You try to give them enough tools that hopefully you find some sort of an advantage.”

The Trojans battled the State’s No. 2 ranked team to a 9-8 game after one quarter and tied the game at 14-14 on an Emma Schmidt basket with 4:31 to play in the half.

Crown Point responded with an 11-0 run to finish the quarter and led 25-14 at the break.

“We missed some shots, didn’t get any calls to get to the line, and had empty possessions,” Campbell said. “They score on the other end and away they go.”

The lead grew to 29-16 early in the third quarter before the Trojans finished the half on an 8-2 run to pull within 40-32.

“The only way you have a chance is to take care of the ball against their press and not allow them to shoot layups,” Campbell said. “They’ll score 75-80 points if you do that.”

Carley Balas led the Trojans with 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss.

“Carley was awesome,” Campbell said. “She had a 6-3 girl guarding her and kept going to the basket and scoring. Just awesome.”

Rounding out the scoring were Nalani Malackowski (11 points), Ashley Craycraft (7 points), Emma Schmidt (6 points) and Lauren Davis (2 points).

“I haven’t coached many Ashley’s in my time here and I’ve been here a long time,” Campbell said. “She’s a battler and fighter. Just a great kid.”

The Trojans finished the season 18-6 overall.

“Nobody in Northwest Indiana thought we would win 18 games this year,” Campbell said. “You always think about who you have a chance against. Then you have to make a play in those games and we were able to do that.”
