The Chesterton
girls golf team had been pointing to Saturday’s round all year.
The Trojans
delivered in a big way and brought home the school’s first IHSAA Regional
Championship with a 317 team score at Battle Ground Golf Club in Lafayette.
“That’s really
something,” Chesterton coach Dale Hewitt said. “They did some things that
some of our really excellent teams in past years didn’t do. It’s quite an
accomplishment. I couldn’t be happier. When they get on a roll, they are
capable of doing things like this.”
Hewitt’s team got
off to a slow start on the front nine with a 166 team score that put them in
a battle with Western, Crown Point and Lafayette Jefferson for the State
Finals berths.
That all changed at
the turn as the Trojans fired a red-hot 151 on the back nine led by a
three-under-par 33 from Grace Davis and an even-par 36 from Elyse Stasil.
“They flipped the
nine’s, so the front nine is the hardest now,” Hewitt said. “Grace wasn’t
happy at the turn and neither was Elyse. I just reminded them how good they
are. They’re much better than they were playing and were capable of getting
it going.”
Davis jump started
her back nine by hitting her approach shot on 10 to two feet and made
birdie. She followed that with another birdie on 11. Davis finished with a
team-best 75 and Stasil shot 79.
“We were just
solid,” Hewitt said. “You have to have four scores that come through. It’s
not just getting a couple of people to go low.”
Cara Kroeger (80),
Andrea Hanas (83) and Lexy Hanas (95) rounded out the scoring.
“When Andrea came
in with 83, I knew that we were ok,” Hewitt said. “I knew that Grace, Elyse
and Cara had it going pretty good. We really putted well and that helped
take some shots off the score. Our short game was really good and that’s
something we’ve really stressed in practice.”
Lake Central’s
Alexis Miestrowski was medalist with a 73, while Western (333) and Crown
Point (333) finished second and third to receive State Finals tickets as
well.
The IHSAA State
Finals will be held Friday and Saturday at Prairie View Golf Club in
Indianapolis.
“If we play well,
I’d like to think we can be in the top half,” Hewitt said. “It’s a fair
course and we’ve played it before, so we are pretty familiar with it. Maybe
we’ll go down there and surprise some people.”
