As Carmel racked up its 30th consecutive IHSAA State Championship, the battle for second took center stage.

Coming down to the final event of the day, Hamilton Southeastern’s second place finish in the 400 Free Relay edged the Chesterton girls swim team 193.5-193.

“That may be the closest ever on the girls side,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “It’s crazy. The kids are a little disappointed. Runner-up was our goal all year.”

The Trojans started the scoring barrage early with the group of Cara Kroeger, Aubrey Wing, Vanessa Krause and Andrea Hanas finishing third in the 200 Medley Relay (1:44.17).

“Coming out of Sectionals, we had a lot of room to make up,” Kinel said. “We had an incredible weekend. I’m so proud of these kids just to put us in a position to do that.”

The individual point scoring started in the 200 IM as Kroeger finished fourth overall (2:02.53).

Krause followed that with a runner-up performance in the 50 Free to Hamilton Southeastern’s Robyn Clevenger (22.91-22.94). Krause, and classmate Kelly Craig, were the lone seniors on the Trojans’ state squad.

“They have meant so much to the program all along, but this weekend with their leadership and performances, I couldn’t have asked for any more from them,” Kinel said. “You always want to have the culture of passing down leadership and that the little things matter. They were great role models.”

After the Diving break, Krause started things back up for the Trojans with another runner-up finish, this time in the 100 Fly (53.72). Carmel’s Veronica Burchill won the event in a State Record time of 51.79.

Krause finished her career with 14 top five finishes at the State Finals, including eight individual events and as part of six relays.

“She was awesome today and then breaking 50 (seconds) in the 400 Free relay to get us out with a chance in the last race,” Kinel said. “She didn’t leave anything in the pool and that’s what you want from a senior.”

Junior Amy Socha also finished 10th overall in the 100 Fly (56.79).

Sophomore Lauryn Kallay finished fifth overall in the 500 Free (4:56.67). Socha tallied points for her 14th place finish (5:03.51).

The 200 Free Relay of Hanas, Kroeger, Socha and Kallay followed with a sixth place finish (1:36.04).

In the 100 Back, Kroeger was fifth overall (56.01) as Jaclyn Klimczak swam to a 16th place finish (58.23).

“Most of the kids will be back,” Kinel said. “The kids that we had in conso’s swam their hearts out Friday night just to put us in a position to have a chance. Then they came back and scored valuable points for us today.”

Craig finished the individual scoring for the Trojans with a 16th place finish in the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.52) before the 400 Free Relay quartet of Krause, Klimczak, Kallay and Craig finished third in 3:26.59.

“We broke a ton of school records during the meet,” Kinel said. “I don’t know that we could have done much better.”
