When the best get together, there is very little that separates them.

The Chesterton girls cross country team finished fourth overall, but just six points out of first, at the Duneland Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday.

Lake Central won the meet with 61 points, followed by Valparaiso (63), Crown Point (63), the Trojans (67), Portage (116), LaPorte (148), Merrillville (210) and Michigan City (NTS).

“Overall the girls really stepped up and ran a great race,” Chesterton coach Lindsay Moskalick said. “Even though we got fourth overall, you can’t be disappointed when it was only six points between first and fourth.”

Bailey Ranta was the top finisher for the Trojans in third place overall (18:36.3).

“Bailey ran a great race and is still capable of much more,” Moskalick said. “She is only a sophomore competing against girls who are juniors and seniors with a lot more race experience. With a few more races ahead for her and the team, I expect to see these girls step up even more.”

Other scorers for Chesterton included Ashley Craycraft (9th, 19:35.3), Bree Gentry (13th, 20:04.6), Peyton Westphal (19th, 20:16.2) and Libby Boster (23rd, 20:25.8).

Rounding out the Trojan lineup were Kaitlynn Leady (25th, 20:29.2) and Frances Clancy (36th, 21:28.7).
