The Chesterton girls basketball team finished the game on a 14-7 run to stay perfect on the season and pick up a 54-46 non-conference victory at Mishawaka on Saturday night.

“We knew we would be tough to play against, but we have to put the ball in the basket and score points,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “We’ve done just enough of that to this point.”

The Trojans built an early 9-4 lead after back-to-back baskets in the paint from Hailey Vale and two 33-pointers from Sarah Dzierba to end the quarter pushed the lead to 15-8.

Mishawaka found their way back into the game at the foul line in the second quarter as they hit 12-of-13 free throws thanks to Trojan foul trouble and trailed just 25-24 at the break.

“Our problem all year so far has been putting the other team on the foul line,” Campbell said. “In the aggressive defense we play, if we get a little lazy or tired, we foul. Got to do a better job with that.”

Two more Dzierba triples started the third quarter with a 10-2 Chesterton run.

Dzierba finished with 12 points and Vale added nine points in the victory.

Mishawaka found themselves within one, 40-39, with 5:52 to play before Courtney Krol scored 11 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter.

“She is so good at creating things,” Campbell said. “Courtney can get the ball to the basket and it’s nothing fancy. She just can dip that shoulder and get past you to the rim.”

Chesterton went 10-of-14 from the foul line in the final 3:00 to set the final score.

The Trojans return to the court on Friday when they host South Central. The JV game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
