The Chesterton girls basketball team dialed in from long distance early and then hung on to stay undefeated (3-0) with a 42-36 victory over Mishawaka on Saturday night.

“We made a few 3’s and it saved us,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “You can never control shooting like that, but we got good shots and made them.”

The Trojans hit four first quarter triples, including two from Emma Schmidt, to build an 18-12 lead after one quarter.

“Emma played well and Nalani (Malackowski) made some 3’s,” Campbell said. “Everybody contributed in their own way.”

The lead grew to 29-21 with Malackowski’s two triples in the second quarter, before the Trojans struggled offensively in the second half.

Chesterton didn’t make a field goal in the third quarter and were just 3-15 (20 percent) from the field after halftime.

“When you play back-to-back like this, and play with only seven people, fatigue sets in at some point,” Campbell said.

Mishawaka hit three more baskets on the night, but turned the ball over 18 times to the Trojans’ nine.

“You’re always concerned about turnovers,” Campbell said. “We didn’t turn it over much tonight and forced them into some travels.”

Chesterton outscored the Cavemen 11-3 from the foul line and 21-9 from 3-point range. The Trojans were 7-of-17 (41 percent) from behind the arc.

Chesterton returns to the floor on Friday night when they travel to South Central. The junior varsity game is set for a 5:30 p.m. start.
