The Chesterton girls basketball team used a 14-4 run to start the second quarter and cruised to a 62-27 non-conference victory over Hobart on Tuesday night.

“If you are going to beat good teams, you have to be able to do the things you do,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “Don’t let them do what they do and be better at your stuff than they are.”

And that wasn’t the case early as the Trojans led just 11-7 after one quarter.

“We were impatient in the first half,” Campbell said. “We drove to the basket and got nothing. We shot the ball quick and got nothing. We didn’t reverse the ball.”

That changed in the second quarter with a 14-4 run that pushed the lead to 25-15 at the break. An 18-6 third quarter put the game away.

Ashley Craycraft led the Trojans with 17 points, while Nalani Malackowski added 11 points in the victory.

“Ashley is our leader,” Campbell said. “When your best player is your toughest player and hardest worker, you have a chance.”

Rounding out the scoring for Chesterton were Emma Schmidt (8 points), Emma Pape (7 points), Kaitlyn Carr (7 points), Carley Balas (6 points), Sophia Raffin (4 points) and Jaelynne Corral (2 points).

The Trojans improved to 14-3 on the season and return to action on Friday night when they host LaPorte in a girls-boys doubleheader.

The girls varsity game tips off at 5:30 p.m.

“You are never sure what your upside is when the season starts,” Campbell said. “We’ve had a lot of toss-up games and we’ve won a lot of them.”
