After dropping back-to-back games, those were the words of advice Jack Campbell gave his Chesterton girls basketball team.

They responded Friday night with their first Duneland Athletic Conference victory in a 54-32 win over Michigan City.

“We had two losses in a row to two really good teams,” Campbell said. “You have to stick with what you do. As long as our defense creates offense for us, we can be a pretty good team.”

The Trojans fell behind 6-1 in the first 3:38 of the game before keeping Michigan City without a field goal until the 6:28 mark of the third quarter.

“We wanted to make it an 84-foot game,” Campbell said. “If it was a half-court game, we knew we were in trouble because of their size. When you play the way we do, things can get ugly.”

Chesterton forced 25 first half turnovers from the Wolves and outscored them 34-6 to build a 35-13 lead.

“We started off well and made some baskets,” Campbell said.

The Trojans held Michigan City to just 2-of-19 shooting (11 percent) in the first half and just 10-of-37 for the night (27 percent).

Offensively, Courtney Krol led the Trojans with 22 points, including 11 steals and five assists. Sarah Dzierba added 10 points in the victory.

“She scored one point in her first game back, but when you haven’t played for a while that’s not unexpected,” Campbell said of Krol. “Tonight, you could tell she’s back playing the way she plays. She had a great ball game.”

Chesterton returns to the court on Friday night when they travel to Portage to face the Indians. The junior varsity game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
