Chesterton girls 12th at New Prairie Semistate

Good was nowhere near good enough for the Chesterton girls cross country team at Saturday's New Prairie Cross Country Semistate.

The Trojans saw their season come to an end with a 12th-place finish.

"They ran solid, as they have been, nothing more, nothing less," coach Brian Carden said. "You try all the tricks you have in the bag to do the best you can do, ways to keep their legs fresh. There are a million ways to run cross country and we were trying to find the way that was best for us. We'll go back to the drawing board. Hopefully, we'll be able to make some changes and get back to the state meet."

Chesterton scored 293 points, last of the six Duneland Athletic Conference teams in the race. West Lafayette tied the meet record for low score with a 32, with LaPorte (2nd, 116), Portage (3rd, 126) and Lake Central (5th, 179) qualifying for state among area schools.

"It's all step by step," Carden said. "Sometimes it takes a year to get a team where you want it. We can't all be Carmel, or West Lafayette."

Freshman Lindsey Nielsen again paced the Trojans, but any aspirations of making it to Terre Haute individually didn't materialize as she finished 51st in 20:22.1.

"We were hoping Lindsey wouild have a great day and make it out," Carden said. "She said it was pretty intense. It's a meet where there's a lot going on. There are 140 runners with teams and 40 more individuals. They're not all big people, but she said she was getting pushed around a little bit. It was definitely an eye opener for her to do what she can do next year."

Chesterton's other scorers were Josie Tolin (71st, 20:43.6), Haley Cushway (74th, 20:48.2), Kaylee Slont (83rd, 20:55) and Kassidy Scott (84th, 20:56.5).

"Josie had a good, solid day, probably one of her better races all season," Carden said. "Kaylee ran consistent, as she has all year. She's been a foundation of the team. When she runs well, we run well."

Leah Sink (103rd, 21:14.6) and Erin Socha (126th, 21:34.8) completed the Trojan lineup. LaPorte's Elena Lancioni captured first place by six seconds with an 18:11.3.

"We've only got two seniors. Everybody else is back," Carden said. "We'll try to get a good winter in, go into track positive and get ready for summer."
