Chesterton Football falls at LaPorte

LaPorte’s grind it out offense doesn’t need help, but the Chesterton football team gave it to them anyway.

The Slicers ran 69 plays to the Trojans 32 and bullied their way to a 29-14 Duneland Athletic Conference victory.

“We didn’t give ourselves a chance to win,” Chesterton coach Mark Peterson said. “Too many missed opportunities. We’ve got to grow up and be big boys and make plays when they are there.”

The Trojans turned the ball over on three of their first four possessions, including a pair of fumbles as LaPorte built a 15-0 halftime lead.

“We left about 28 points out on the field tonight,” Peterson said. “The three fumbles were just drops during exchanges or trying to make a little too much out of a run.”

The lead grew to 22-0 before things got cranked up for the Trojan offense.

First Jacob Coslet hit Ben Slatcoff for a 30-yard touchdown and then after a three-and-out for the Chesterton defense, Coslet found Slatcoff across the middle for 60 yards and a touchdown.

Coslet finished 7-of-16 for 186 yards, while Slatcoff caught four passes for 115 yards.

“We did a pretty decent job of throwing the ball and spreading it around to some open guys,” Peterson said. “We also missed some open guys running down the field. It’s Jacob’s third varsity game.”

Another stop for the defense gave the Trojans the ball in the fourth quarter and they drove all the way to the Slicers 20-yard line, but were unsuccessful on back-to-back throws with 9:01 to play.

That’s all LaPorte needed as they ground out a 15-play, 80-yard drive that took 6:53 off the clock before an Isaac Alexander touchdown set the final score.

“Losing Kody (Wilkerson) early in the second half hurts us, but they wore us down,” Peterson said. “That’s that offense.”

Chesterton returns to the field on Friday when they travel to Valparaiso to take on the Vikings. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“We’ve played a great quarter each of the last two weeks,” Peterson said. “We have to see what the plays are we can make and try to put four quarters together.”
