The Chesterton football team finally got the offensive balance they’ve been looking for and picked up a 42-24 Duneland Athletic Conference and Homecoming victory over Lake Central on Friday night.

“It’s nice to get back on the winning side,” Chesterton coach Mark Peterson said. “For five of the last six weeks, we’ve had opportunities and tonight we finally took advantage of them.”

The Trojans scored the game’s first touchdown as the defense forced a punt that was blocked by Braden Corzan. Brandt Wilder picked up the loose ball and went 27 yards to put Chesterton on top 6-0.

Lake Central responded with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Zach Bundalo to Giovanni Lopez. On the night, the Indians racked up 486 total yards, including 229 through the air.

A three-and-out by the Trojan offense got aided by a 62-yard punt from Chris VanEekeren that was downed at the LC 1-yard line.

One play later, Wilder forced an intentional grounding penalty that resulted in a safety and an 8-7 Trojan lead.

“Our defense and special teams made a couple of huge plays to get us going,” Peterson said.

After the free kick, it took the offense just three plays as Andrew Zimmerman hit Cory Boren from 31 yards away. Harley Lohmeyer’s point-after-touchdown was good for a 15-7 lead.

“Andrew Zimmerman stepped up and made good decisions for us and got the ball out of his hands on-time and to the right spots in the passing game,” Peterson said.

Zimmerman was 6-of-12 through the air for 170 yards.

In the second quarter, Zimmerman found Jake Warren for a 30-yard touchdown and Louie Razo scampered 46 yards to give the Trojans a 29-7 lead at halftime.

Razo ran for 116 yards on 13 carries, while Warren caught two passes for 37 yards.

“We got the ball to open receivers,” Peterson said. “We made the correct reads up front. We got the ball in (Razo’s) hands in space. He’s a difference maker.”

Chesterton picked up right where they left off after halftime with an 8-play, 82-yard touchdown drive that finished with Zimmerman finding a wide open Ben Slatcoff for the final 47 yards. Slatcoff caught two passes for 70 yards.

Lake Central answered with two touchdowns to close within 36-24 before the Trojans put together a seven-play, 62-yard drive that finished with Anthony Frencl going one yard to set the final score.

“We did some good things up front,” Peterson said. “We executed pretty well with guys like Charlie Bernth, Wyatt Pendleton and Alex Scott.”

The Trojans rushed for 195 yards and passed for 170 as they gained 365 yards offensively, their top total of the season.

“It was a good balance for us offensively tonight,” Peterson said. “We got on schedule and that made a difference for us.”

The Trojans return to the field on Friday night when they host Crown Point beginning at 7 p.m.

“These guys have a huge heart,” Peterson said. “We’ve battled for five weeks and tonight was a chance for us to get on the winning side.”
