Chesterton Boys win 3 Regional Track Titles

The Chesterton boys track team won three IHSAA Regional events Thursday night and advanced seven athletes to the IHSAA State Finals with Thursday night’s performances at Valparaiso High School.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way we performed tonight,” Chesterton coach TR Harlan said. “These guys earned their way to the Regional with hard work and tonight they accomplished their goals.”

The Trojans opened the meet with a victory from the quartet of Kevin Kenney, Marlon Williams, Tyler Vore and Billy Biehl in the 4x800 in 7:51.54.

“Those guys have big goals,” Harlan said. “Tonight was the first step toward that. They know they can run even better. I expect big things from them next weekend.”

Biehl later won the 800 in 1:56.54 leading from start to finish. Vore finished eighth in 2:05.79.

“Billy ran like he has all year,” Harlan said. “He led from the first step of the race and just continued to build his lead. He’s a special kid and runner. I still don’t think we’ve seen the best Billy Biehl yet.”

The other Trojan victory came in the pole vault where Dominic Raffin won the title on a misses tiebreaker. Merrillville’s Garrett Ferrell was second, while Chesterton’s Brett Lara was third.

All three cleared 14-3.

“What a great day for Dominic,” Harlan said. “He and Brett have worked so hard this year and it showed up on the biggest night of the year. We know Brett has been battling an injury for a couple of weeks and having nine days before the State Finals is really going to help him.”

The Trojans’ final state qualifier came in the shot put as Luke Cota finished third at 56 feet, 4 1 inches.

“That’s 10 feet further than he threw last year,” Harlan said. “What an accomplishment for a kid that’s really busted his butt to get better. Couldn’t be happier for him.”
