Chesterton boys win 2nd straight state volleyball title

The Chesterton boys volleyball team won its second consecutive Indiana Boys Volleyball Coaches Association State Championship with a victory over No. 2 Indianapolis Roncalli 25-9, 23-25, 19-25, 25-19, 15-12 on Saturday.

The No. 1 ranked Trojans finished the year 23-7 overall.

“It was a great team effort,” Chesterton coach Craig Cromwell said. “We’re a senior-heavy team and the seniors stepped up huge.”

Chesterton opened the weekend with a victory over No. 9 Lafayette Jefferson 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 in the quarterfinals on Friday night and followed that up with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 win in the semifinals over No. 5 Indianapolis Cathedral on Saturday morning.

Senior Kai Cromwell was named Tournament Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Evan Ruffner and Jack Roach.

The Trojan quartet of Cromwell, Ruffner, Dominic Raffin and Andrew Balon also were named to the All-State Team over the weekend.
