Chesterton Boys Track finishes runnerup at suspended DAC Meet

Chesterton captured the most battles in Wednesday's Duneland Athletic Conference Championship, but the Trojans didn't win the war.

Despite a meet-best seven first-places, they fell short of Portage in the team race. The Indians led 104-98 when competition was suspended by lightning with the pole vault still in progress.

The final event will be completed today, but Chesterton has no one in it after top-seed Ben Raffin no-heighted.

"We thought we would definitely get eight points there if not 10," coach Bryan Nallenweg said. "That's track. Those things happen."

The Trojans' deck was already minus a few key cards with third-seeded hurdler Ryan Harmon unable to participate due to an academic function at the high school and long jumper Phil Flores sidelined for precautionary reasons by a hamstring pull.

"Everybody's dealing with injuries," Nallenweg said. "We're not going to make excuses. I knew we'd be up there, but I didn't think we'd be able to compete that close to Portage. We were talking, who was the most impressive runner? Braden (Corzan) won four events, but at the same time, Jake (Kintzele) had two unbelievable times in his (1,600-3,200) double. They were equally impressive."

Corzan took the 100 and 200 and was part of the first-place 400 and 1,600 relays. He won the 100 in 10.94 and the 200 in 22.19.

"Not a bad day," said Corzan, who missed last year's meet with a broken wrist. "The adrenaline was a lot higher. The nerves were a lot worse. But you run so much faster with that drive. Once we got in the locker room, I was ready to leave. My adrenaline was through the roof and I was able to carry it over. I was yelling at myself during races. My start in the 100 final was slower than everybody, but I accelerated and caught everybody."

Chesterton won the 400 relay in 42.22 with EJ Biokoro, the 200 runner-up to Corzan, overcoming Portage's Greg Milledge in the final straightaway. The 1,600 relay (3:26.01) was awarded the title when Crown Point was disqualified for interference during an exchange. Long jump Louie Razo (21-3 3/4) subbed in for Flores in both races, finding out Tuesday he would be pinch running.

"My four by four could have been a little faster if I hadn't done five races before," Corzan said.

Kintzele finished strong to secure a pair of narrow victories. He edged Valpo's Carlos Martinez 4:20.74 to 4:21.34 in the 1,600 and did the same with Portage's Antonio Chapa, 9:29.27 to 9:29.75 in the 3,200.

"To be honest, I felt like I was losing both races, but I got some sort of fire in my gut I wasn't expecting to be there," Kintzele said. "It made me push myself to places I didn't want to go. I finished second in the two-mile two times in a row, so to finally get first was awesome. I felt like I was getting second all the time."

Elsewhere for Chesterton, Darren Corzan placed fourth in the 100 and Noah Mahoney sixth in the long jump. The Trojans didn't score in the 400, 800, high jump, either hurdles race or the throws.

Portage will prevail despite its second-seeded 300 hurdler false starting and losing a third in the 400 to disqualification.

"Every team here is capable of scoring big points," Portage coach Nick Haas said. "We knew it could go either way. It was back and forth. What's been big for us is we're able to get at least a couple points in every event. We only had one or two where we didn't score."
