The Chesterton boys track team turned in its best team-performance ever at the IHSAA State Track and Field Championships Saturday at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The Trojans scored 23 1 points to finish sixth overall, eclipsing a school-best 20-point total in 1987. Lawrence Central won the team title with 78 points.

“What an incredible day,” Chesterton coach TR Harlan said. “I can’t say enough about the way the boys performed today. We had a point-total in mind and wanted to crack the top 10 as a team. We exceeded both those expectations. Incredible.”

The day started with a third place performance from the quartet of Joe Troop, Billy Biehl, Austin Palombizio and Tyler Rusboldt in the 4x800 Relay. The group finished in 7:47.61, bettering the school-record by nearly six seconds.

“I thought the 4x8 really set the tone for the day,” Harlan said. “Joe got us off to a great start on the opening leg and the freshman, Billy Biehl, was incredible just like he’s been all year. You give the baton to a pair of seniors (Palombizio and Rusboldt) the last half of the race and you’re pretty confident in what’s going to happen.”

Senior Justin Zosso finished tied for third in the pole vault after clearing 15-foot-3.

“Justin came here to win,” Harlan said. “Nobody’s disappointed though. He’s had an incredible year and career. Justin’s a great role model for what hard work and dedication can do for you.

“He’s got a lot of vaulting left in him for his college years. He’ll only get better and better.”

Troop ran a 48.82 open 400 to push the Trojans’ over the 20-point total and finished with at third place medal.

“One of our team goals was to score 20 points and get into the top 10,” Harlan said. “Joe’s race was perfect. He was calm, comfortable and fast. I think he finally understands just how good he can be and that showed up today on the biggest stage.”

The final points for Chesterton came in the day’s final event with a seventh place finish in the 4x400 relay from Archie Sullivan, Biehl, Jordan Napier and Troop in 3:19.63.

“Archie ran a great leg to get us started and Billy always puts us into contention,” Harlan said. “Jordan worked really hard the last month or so to earn a spot on this relay as a senior and delivered his best time of the year. Once Joe had the baton with someone to chase you knew we had a chance.

“Coming out of the second heat and beating two teams in the fast heat is a testament to the heart those kids have.”

The final Trojan competing Saturday was senior Richie Ruff in the 110 hurdles. Ruff finished 22nd overall in 15.53 seconds.

“Richie is another one of those kids that you are just excited to see compete at this level,” Harlan said. “He’s worked so hard and done everything we’ve asked of him. To get here is a victory as far as I’m concerned.”
