First year coach Lucas Sabedra must be getting bored.

His top-ranked Chesterton boys soccer team is undefeated and won the Class 3A IHSAA Sectional title 5-0 at Portage on Saturday night.

“I think we have taken a backseat throughout the tournament so far,” Sabedra said. “I told them they had to be ready to play right away and get after it. The plan was to score early and keep the pressure up.”

Another perfectly executed plan.

It took 11:39 for the Trojans to crack the scoreboard as Bailey Arthur ran down a ball in the right corner and centered it to Zack Bowser for the early tally inside the right post.

Bowser made it 2-0 just under 11 minutes later when a rebound off a shot by Robbie Capehart found him alone in front of the goal.

“Some kids just have it in the post-season and (Zack) has it,” Sabedra said. “He wants to win and this is the time of year when great players elevate their game. He’s doing just that.”

Bowser made it 3-0 on a pass from Jack Eaton with 16:06 left to play.

“I told him before the game he was going to get a hat trick,” Sabedra said with a laugh. “He’s got an engine that never stops. He wants to go forward and score.”

Joey Stark found Ryan O’Dell for a 4-0 lead and senior Bailey Arthur scored with just 31.8 seconds left from 30 yards away to set the final score.

The Trojans have allowed just one goal through three games in the tournament.

“Defensively, we’ve been really solid,” Sabedra said. “Jack Eaton has really stepped into the moment as a senior and a leader. He’s so vocal in the back. Nick Biel is so cool on the field. We play the ball from the back through him. He’s our guy in the middle that connects all the dots.”

Charlie Eaton recorded three saves in the victory.

Chesterton will face off against Penn in the second IHSAA Regional semifinal at Goshen beginning at 11 a.m. Chesterton time.

“I don’t know anything about them,” Sabedra said. “We’ll worry about our game and hope it’s good enough.”
