The Chesterton boys basketball team found the wrong night to struggle and saw a magical season come to an end.

The Merrillville Pirates built a 34-24 halftime lead and never saw the spread get under six as they beat the Trojans 80-59 on Friday night in the semifinals of the IHSAA Chesterton Sectional.

“We did all the things you can’t do against Merrillville if you want to win,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said.

The Trojans built an early 12-7 lead, but struggled from there. On the night, Chesterton turned the ball over 17 times and were just 12-of-24 from the foul line.

“We had difficulty getting into some things and getting the ball to certain spots on the floor,” Urban said. “We missed free throws early when we had a chance to keep the game close. We’ve shot them well all year. They just didn’t go in tonight.”

On the other end, Merrillville hit 21-of-23 shots from the charity stripe and turned the ball over just 10 times.

“They did everything right and we just didn’t have an answer for them on either end,” Urban said.

Senior Austin Peterson led the Trojan offense with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Classmate Ky Palombizio finished with 11 points and a pair of steals.

“Our five seniors were awesome this year,” Urban said. “All five had different roles. They mean so much to the future of this program. They set the bar as far as expectations and our culture as a basketball program.”

Sophomore Jake Wadding finished with 14 points.

“Jake did everything he could to play in this game,” Urban said. “He was here for three hours last Saturday getting treatment. He’s done everything we could have asked of him.”

The Trojans finished the season 21-4 overall.

“It was a fun year with a lot of good things,” Urban said. “I’m really proud of our kids. They had expectations put on them from day one and they grinded all year. To win 21 games is obviously great.

“I’m proud to have been part of that group of kids as their coach.”
