The Chesterton boys golf team are inching closer to the 300 mark that Coach Pat Ward wants.

Monday afternoon, the Trojans fired a 309 team score to win the Duneland Athletic Conference Meet at the Brassie.

Valparaiso (311), Lake Central (315), Crown Point (341), LaPorte (371), Portage (378), Michigan City (382) and Merrillville (415) followed the Trojans.

Chesterton’s victory, which counts as 1/3 of the overall DAC race, forces a three-way tie for the conference crown with Crown Point and Valparaiso.

Devin Trusty and Jackson Roberts led CHS with four-over-par 76’s. Trusty recorded two birdies on the back nine on his way to a one-under-par 35, while Roberts tallied one birdie on each side.

“Jackson (Roberts) really came through for us today,” Ward said. “Devin got off to a slow start, but really got hot on the back nine.”

Sean Elliott shot 78 and Cameron Schultz back that up with a 79 as four Trojans broke 80.

“We told Cam he needed another to pick up another stroke on Valpo with one hole to play and he hit his tee shot five feet from the hole on 17 and made the birdie,” Ward said. “Sean was solid. He had to be close to the kid from Valpo in his group and he stayed right with him.”

Jackson Kerkes rounded out the scoring with an 86.

“Jackson didn’t do anything wrong, he just never got into a rhythm,” Ward said. “He never could find his rhythm on a tough, windy day.”
