It’s almost a mini-Regional Tournament.
The Chesterton boys golf team finished fourth overall Friday in the Uebele
Invitational at Beechwood Golf Course in LaPorte. Indianapolis Cathedral took
top honors (302), followed by Valparaiso (319), Mishawaka Marian (320) and
the Trojans (324).
“This tournament is a lot of the teams that play in our Regional,” Chesterton
coach John Sparks said. “Mathematically we were in the top three, but Lake
Central only had two varsity kids and LaPorte was only one stroke behind us.”
The Trojans put four players between 80 and 83, but didn’t have anyone put 18
holes together.
“We need to get to know Beechwood better,” Sparks said. “We just don’t feel
overly confident for some reason. The team’s that do well there play there a
lot. They get there by themselves and work at it. We need to do that.”
Chesterton’s Ryan Grassel fired a team-best 80, carding a 38 on the front
nine and 42 on the back. Josh Kalita put together a 41 on the front and 39 on
the back to tie Grassel for team-medalist honors.
“They all had ups and downs,” Sparks said. “We had two or three kids shoot
30-something for nine, but shoot in the 40’s on the other side. We have to
drop some of the scores down.
“I think we shot 324 here last year in the Regional and we were one shot
away.”
Nick Stasil fired an 81 that included a 37 on the back nine and a birdie on
the 18th hole. Kyle Grassel shot 83 and Pat Herrod carded an 88 to round out
the Chesterton scoring.
“We’re 11-1 right now, but they need to peak at the right time,” Sparks said.
“Friday wasn’t the time. It’s still several weeks away. The question is
getting them to all do it on the same day.
“I think we’ll be ready. We’re capable of going really low.”
