The Chesterton boys golf team got two low numbers, but it takes four, as
they finished fifth in the Duneland Athletic Conference Meet on Monday at
the Brassie.
Crown Point won the team title with a 318 score, while Valparaiso (320),
Portage (325), LaPorte (334), Chesterton (339), Lake Central (344), Michigan
City (351) and Merrillville (383) followed.
“Our first two guys put us in a great position, we’ve been looking for those
other two scores all year,“ Chesterton coach Kent Butler said. “That’s what
we have to find to challenge the top teams. Part of that is trying to get
the right mix of guys.
“We can’t seem to get four scores on the same night.”
Mike Marshall took top honors for the Trojans with a 76, good for third
place overall.
“Really proud of Mike Marshall,” Butler said. “There have been a couple
times this season where we needed him to come up big and he has.”
Marshall blistered the front nine with an even par 36 and tallied a 40 on
the back nine in a gusting wind.
“You have to hit the ball solid when you play in the wind,” Butler said.
“You can’t outmuscle the wind and he didn’t try to do that.”
Vander Zanden tied for fourth overall with a 77 that included a 40 on the
front nine and a 37 on the back.
“Adam played great today too,” Butler said. “He really played within himself
and managed the course in the wind.”
Austin Johnson and Brandon Martin both fired a 93, while Logan Krantz
rounded out the scoring with a 94.
