Sometimes the other team just wins.

The Chesterton boys golf team fired a season-best 309, but finished second to Crown Point (302) in the Duneland Athletic Conference Meet at the Brassie on Wednesday afternoon.

“I’m really impressed with a 309. It’s the best score we’ve had all year,” Chesterton coach Jordan Nelson said. “Hats off to Crown Point for shooting 302. They are really good and you’re disappointed to finish second, but can’t complain about playing the way we did when a team just got hot.”

Mitch Davis led the Trojans with a one-under-par 71 that included birdies on holes 11 and 18 and an eagle on 1. Devin Trusty followed with a 73 and Eli Winski tallied a 78.

“Mitch played well and so did Devin. Eli played great today too,” Nelson said. “The top three scores we had are the type of scores we’ve been looking for all season. We just have to keep working on getting that fourth score.”

Rounding out the scoring for Chesterton were Cade Lewandowski (87) and Cameron Schultz (99).

“Course management is what we’ve preached all year,” Nelson said. “Play smart and within yourself and we saw that from the top three out there. The conditions weren’t ideal and they just battled through it.

“We actually played some of our best golf after it started raining.”

The Trojans return to the course a week from Friday when they travel to Forest Park Golf Course for the IHSAA Valparaiso Sectional.

“Hopefully, we build off of this heading to Sectionals next week and then on to Regionals at BattleGround,” Nelson said. “This course (Brassie) and BattleGround are pretty similar. We should be able to take our successes here and use them there.”
