Chesterton Boys finish 6th at IHSAA Swimming State Finals in Indy

The Chesterton boys swim team brought home six medals from the IHSAA State Finals over the weekend in Indianapolis as the Trojans finished sixth overall as a team.

“We did really well on Friday,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “Saturday was a typical finals day with people dropping time like crazy.”

The Trojans top finishes came in the 200 and 400 Free Relays.

“That was the plan,” Kinel said. “We thought we might have a shot to score high or win one. Those times are fast. We didn’t really think about records.”

In the 200 Free Relay, the quartet of Wesley Slaughter, Sam Kravitz, Declan Tharp and Gary Kostbade finished runner-up in 1:24.01. They also set the school record.

“The 200 Free Relay was a school record,” Kinel said. “That’s hard to do.”

In the 400 Free Relay, the group of Slaughter, Kravitz, Chris Kaptur and Kostbade finished third in 3:05.73.

“Gary, Sam and Wes were unbelievable on the relays today,” Kinel said. “Chris Kaptur was great in the 400 Free too.”

Individually, the top finish came from Kostbade in the 100 Breaststroke (55.42) in third place. Kravitz finished sixth in the 50 Free (21.22) and Nick Hanas was seventh in the 500 Free (4:36.83).

“For those guys to get on the podium individually was good,” Kinel said.

Kostbade also finished eighth in the 100 Fly (50.11).

“Gary has been our top guy all year,” Kinel said. “Then to go down to the State Meet and perform like that is great.”

Other Chesterton point scorers included Slaughter in the 50 Free (11th, 21.52) and 100 Free (13th, 47.37), Kravitz in the 100 Free (11th, 46.65), Hanas in the 200 Free (13th, 1:43.15) and Andrew Gillen in the 100 Breast (13th, 58.64).

The Trojan contingency that ventured to Indy over the weekend included just one senior, Chris Kaptur.

“Everyone that swam, except Kaptur is back,” Kinel said. “We got everybody really good experience this weekend. It was a good cap to a great year.”
