The Chesterton boys swim team battled all day Saturday and used its top finish to secure fourth place at the IHSAA State Finals in Indianapolis.

Carmel won its fourth straight state title with 417 points, followed by Franklin (203), Zionsville (185), the Trojans (151.5) and Homestead (148) in the top five.

“Before Sectional, we knew that top five would be a good finish for us,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “The kids battled like crazy on Saturday. It came down to that last (400 Free) relay. The kids swam their butts off.”

In the day’s final event, the Trojans found themselves in fifth place in the standings, two points ahead of FW Carroll and 18 behind Homestead.

The quartet of Andrew Alders, Declan Tharp, Justin Wallar and Nick Hanas finished fourth overall in a time of 3:07.54 to leapfrog Homestead and hold off FW Carroll.

“The opportunity to finish that high came from getting all three relays in the finals,” Kinel said. “All those guys were great both days. Relays are double points and so important if you want to compete at the top. Getting all three relays through to the finals was huge for us.”

The 200 Free relay group of Ethan Wing, Tharp, Gabe Kroeger and Wallar finished fifth in 1:25.10, while the 200 Medley quartet of Lucas Piunti, Noah VanNevel, Alders and Wing were seventh in 1:33.41.

“I’m pretty pleased,” Kinel said. “We’re one of the fastest state’s in the country. We manufactured a lot of things and it worked out. I couldn’t be prouder of these kids.”

Individually, Hanas picked up a pair of fifth place finishes in the 200 Free (1:41.20) and the 500 Free (4:33.76).

“Nick did his thing,” Kinel said. “He was awesome in the 400 Free relay and solid all weekend. What a great leader he was for us.”

Alders finished sixth overall in the 100 Fly (49.85).

“Andrew struggled in the IM on Friday, but turned it around to get in the finals of the Fly,” Kinel said. “His legs on the relays were really big.”

The other medalist for the Trojans was Ethan Wing with an eighth place finish in the 100 Free (46.71).

“The swim of the weekend was probably Ethan jumping up into the finals of the 100 Free,” Kinel said. “That was really big.”

Chesterton also racked up points in the consolation finals with performances by Alders in the 200 IM (9th, 1:51.72), Wallar in the 500 Free (14th, 4:41.86) and the 200 Free (15th, 1:43.31) and Piunti in the 100 Back (14th, 51.64) and the 200 IM (16th, 1:54.09).

“All those things are points and when it is as close as it was, that’s really important,” Kinel said. “The kids got great experience, Kids who had been there before showed great leadership. Nick (Hanas) and Justin (Wallar) were the only ones in individual events before. It was an awesome experience for the younger guys.”
