Neither knew and only one was surprised.

Chesterton senior Jake Wadding finished two rebounds short of a triple-double as the Trojans improved to 14-1 on the season and 3-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play with a 61-41 victory at Crown Point on Friday.

Wadding scored 12 points, dished out 10 assists and grabbed eight rebounds on the night as Chesterton jumped out to an 18-2 first quarter lead and cruised from there.

“This is what Jake has done for us all year,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “People don’t understand why he isn’t averaging 35 points a game, but he’s so unselfish and does so many things for us on both ends of the floor. I hope that’s not going unnoticed.”

Crown Point tried to mount a rally in the third quarter with the use of a zone and cut the lead to 29-19 midway through the period.

“The zone slowed us down a bit,” Urban said. “On offense, we get a lot of movement, and when teams go zone, it’s ok to slow down a little. We’re always trying to move it quick and we still need to move the ball inside-out.”

Travis Grayson ignited a 9-0 run to push the lead to 38-19 with five points, including a rally-starting three-pointer. Grayson led the Trojans with 13 points.

“Travis has been doing really good things for us,” Urban said. “He made the right decisions tonight and when he makes the right decisions, he’s really good.”

Rounding out the scoring for the Trojans were Jake Warren (12 points), Alex Schmidt (11 points), Chris Mullen (6 points), Sean Elliott (5 points) and Karson Cardenas (2 points).

The Trojans return to the court on Friday when they travel to Lake Central. The JV game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

“You have to continue taking things one game at a time,” Urban said. “We’ve got a big game next week at Lake Central. Anytime you play on the road in the DAC, it’s always difficult.”
