Chesterton baseball team beats Valparaiso

The Chesterton baseball team scored runs early and late in picking up a 6-3 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Valparaiso on Wednesday.

The Trojans scratched out a run in the top of the first inning as Tyler Sufana reached on a two-out error by the Vikings. After stealing second, Sufana scored on an RBI single by Brandon Roeske.

An Andrew Ralph sacrifice fly in the second pushed the lead to 2-0 as Patrick Tilden scored.

The game would stay that way until the top of the fourth when Cameron O’Brien reached on an error and Matt Kubacki was hit by a pitch. Michael Griffin drew a walk to load the bases.

Ralph singled to plate O’Brien and Corey Rusboldt’s sacrifice fly put the Trojans on top 4-0.

The Vikings finally got to Kubacki, the Chesterton starter, in the bottom of the fourth. A two-out double plated a pair of runs as a three-run Valpo rally cut the led to 4-3.

The Trojans put the game away in the seventh inning as Sufana led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Cole Teal’s sacrifice fly plated Sufana.

Courtesy runner Jordan Dilosa moved to third on a single by O’Brien and scored on Kubacki’s single to center.

Teal would slam the door from the pitcher’s mound in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Ralph and Kubacki led the Chesterton offense with two hits each, while Kubacki also got the win on the mound after going 5.1 innings and striking out six.

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 10, Valparaiso 6

The Chesterton junior varsity pounded out 14 hits and picked up a 10-6 victory over Valparaiso on Wednesday.

Michael Mallon led the Trojan offense with three hits, while Logan Hofferth and Carter Braveman each had two hits. Hofferth tallied three RBI’s in the victory.

Isaac Shook picked up the win on the mound with 5.1 innings of work and 11 strikeouts. Blake Soffa pitched the final 1.2 innings and struck out three.
