Welcome to 4A.

The Chesterton baseball team captured its second consecutive IHSAA Sectional title with a 6-3 victory over Class 4A No. 2 Andrean on Saturday at Merrillville.

“I still get butterflies, that doesn’t go away,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “It’s great for the kids. I’ve had my share of this. Andrean is a great program, with a great coach, but it was nice to get this one.”

The two-time defending Class 3A champion 59ers opened the game by getting an early run against Trojan starter Grant Brunt.

Evan Hylek drew a leadoff walk and moved all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt. Hylek scored on an RBI single by Adam Bednarek.

“Grant did it to himself in the first,” Campbell said. “That’s all he gave up. The mark of any pitcher is determined by how you come back from it and he was super.”

Brunt retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced to give his offense a chance to get going. On the night, he worked 5.1 innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

“Grant pitched down at Carmel for us in the championship game and just pitched great,” Campbell said. “He hasn’t been given a whole lot of opportunities. We’ve seen that from him in the bullpen every day.”

The Trojans finally cracked the scoreboard in the fourth when Austin Peterson reached with one out on an Andrean error. Pinch-runner Issac Shook scored on double and error off the bat of Patrick Arndt to tie the game.

Blake Soffa’s triple to right field plated courtesy runner Logan Hofferth for a 2-1 Chesterton lead.

The hit parade continued in the fifth when Jack Mullen singled with one out. With two outs, Ethan Conway and Anthony Kurek drew walks to load the bases. Peterson’s two-run single to center scored Mullen and Conway.

A single by Arndt plated Kurek for a 5-1 lead.

The 59ers started a rally in the sixth as Brunt put two runners on before giving way to Peterson. Peterson struck out Brad Leveque and Bailey Scurlock to end the frame.

“Pete told (Assistant) Coach (Dan) Caudle he had two innings today,” Campbell said. “We got into the sixth and then made a decision. He got us out of a jam with a couple of strikeouts in the sixth. Then made big pitches in the seventh when he had too.”

Owen Hallas led off the top of the seventh with a home run to left before Andrean put together another rally in the bottom of the frame that brought the tying run to the plate.

Peterson recorded a strike out and got a pair of fly balls to end the game.

“We lost five games to weather early in the year and didn’t get to see our kids play,” Peterson said. “As you go along, you sort things out and hope you play well at the end of the year. “

The Trojans will face Munster, a 5-4 winner over Lake Central, on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the IHSAA LaPorte Regional.
