Chesterton Baseball splits in Lafayette

Back To Front Page

Although mother nature made it tough, the Chesterton baseball team finally got back on the field and split a pair of games in Lafayette on Saturday.

In the opener, the Trojans got a one hit performance from the pitching quartet of Grant Brunt (5 strikeouts), Stephen Gilbertsen (5 strikeouts), Chris Torres (4 strikeouts) and Chad Dzierba (2 strikeouts) and picked up an 11-1 win over Lafayette Harrison.

Chesterton got on the board in the first inning as Austin Peterson was hit by a pitch with two outs. A double by Brett Roeske plated Peterson for a 1-0 lead.

The lead grew to 2-0 when Tyler Nelson and Tommy Benson drew one out walks. Petersonís RBI double scored Nelson.

In the fourth, Logan Lawson doubled with one out and Patrick Sosby followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Nelson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Bensonís fielders choice scored Lawson. Peterson was intentionally walked to reload the bases. Roeske drew another walk to score Sosby from third.

Grant Bruntís single up the middle scored Benson and Peterson to push the lead to 6-1.

Three more runs in the sixth inning started with Bensonís double to left. Peterson followed that with another double that scored Benson.

Roeske walked moving pinch-runner Jeremy Krantz to second. Krantz moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on the second wild pitch of the inning.

Courtesy runner Connor Krantz moved to second on a ground ball by Brunt. Krantz scored on yet another wild pitch to move the lead to 9-1.

The gameís final two runs came in the seventh inning for the Trojans as Sosby singled to start the frame. Benson singled to right field and moved to second on the throw back to the infield as Sosby came all the way around to score. Benson scored on Roeskeís RBI single.

In game two, the Trojans dropped a 9-3 decision despite outhitting Harrison 11-6.

Harrison scored two runs in the first, but Chesterton plated one in the second to cut the lead in half. Kolton Cardenas started with a single and moved to second on a single by Zach McKenna. Garrett Fairbanksí single scored Cardenas.

Harrison would score seven runs in the bottom of the second as the Trojans struggled finding the strike zone.

Chesterton did mount a seventh inning rally with a pair of runs as Fairbanks started the frame with a walk. Following a pair of strikeouts, Sosby singled to center and Connor Krantz singled to score Fairbanks.

Sosby would score after a pair of wild pitches, but the rally would come up short.
