Chesterton Baseball racks up win at Portage

The Chesterton baseball team continued its winning ways with a 4-2 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Portage on Monday.

The Trojans fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first on an Eric Mesarch two-run home run off of Chesterton starter Mitch Kobitz.

Kobitz, who struck out three, would allow just four hits and no runs the rest of the way in garnering the victory. The Indians did not get a runner past second base over the final six innings as Kobitz retired 18 of the last 23 batters he faced.

CHS tied the game in the fourth inning as Jordan Mornadini reached on a dropped third strike to start the frame. Aery Pratt’s single to left and Mike Crowley’s double scored Morandini. Pinch-runner Colin McEuen scored on a ground out by Tyler Sufana.

The Trojans put the final touches on the victory in the sixth inning with a pair of runs. Morandini singled to start things off and Pratt’s double to center field scored him. Crowley’s double plated Pratt with the game’s final run.

Offensively, Pratt and Crowley both had a pair of hits to lead the Trojans. Other hits came from Andrew Ralph, Morandini and Kobitz.
