Cinderella turned into a pumpkin one hour early.

As the clock struck 11 p.m. on Wednesday night, Bryce Pause strolled home from third base in the bottom of the 10th inning to give No. 1 ranked Crown Point a 2-1 Sectional opening victory over Chesterton.

“Great high school ball game,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “We certainly had our chances and just didn’t get the big hit when we needed it.”

Crown Point started the scoring in the third with an unearned run off of Chesterton starter Tyler Nelson. Nelson worked 6 1/3 innings before being lifted because of the state’s pitch count rule. He struck out 12 and allowed just three hits.

“Tyler was awesome,” Campbell said. “He really battled out there. Probably should’ve won the game 1-0. Can’t ask for him to do much more.”

The Trojans tied the game in the top of the fourth when Zach Westphal doubled to left to start the inning. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Westphal scored when Tyler Nelson reached on an error.

Chesterton put a runner on second in the fifth, loaded the bases in the sixth and had runners on second and third in the seventh, but couldn’t score against CP starter Ryan Fender.

Fender threw seven innings, allowing three hits and striking out 15.

“He’s good,” Campbell said. “We’ve seen him before and he’s always around the plate. You have to be aggressive early in the count against him.”

In the bottom of the 10th, Gene Kolarik moved all the way to second on a Trojan error. After an intentional walk and a hit by pitch, Jacob Bosse drew a bases loaded walk from Chesterton pitcher Chad Dzierba.

“Chad threw great,” Campbell said. “What a tough spot for a kid to come into. He got out of the bases loaded jam in the ninth with a couple strikeouts. Just threw great.”

The Trojans finished the season 12-13 overall.

“Up and down year for us,” Campbell said. “We had a bunch of new guys out there playing and they saved their best one for last. It just wasn’t quite enough.”
