The Chesterton baseball team doesn’t have to worry about offense.
The Trojans (6-2, 3-1) have scored 35 runs during their last three contests
including 15 Wednesday night in a 15-0 five-inning rout of Merrillville.
“We obviously hit the ball well,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “It
was a good game to have once in a while. Everybody got a chance to play.”
The Trojans jumped on top with four runs in the first inning and backed that
up with seven more runs in the second frame. The barrage continued with three
more in the third and a 14-0 lead.
“It was a tough day to play with the wind blowing like it was,” Campbell
said. “We had a couple hits that blooped over heads and Kevin (Gates) hit a
fly ball to left that ended up as a three-run home run.”
The Trojans pounded out 14 hits and were aided by four Pirate errors. Jeremy
Ross was 2-for-2 on the day with five RBI’s, while Gates was 2-for-2 with a
home run. Evan Parana was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Nine different Trojans picked up a hit in the contest.
On the mound, Steve Janes allowed just three hits and struck out three in
working the first four innings to pick up his second win of the season. Dan
Detmar worked the final frame and struck out one without allowing a hit.
“Steve pitched well and Danny came in and threw strikes,” Campbell said. “We
had some outstanding defensive plays as well. Mark Sullivan made a diving
catch in center field and Nick Sharp made one in right field.”
The Trojans return to the field tonight when they travel to East Chicago
Central for a 5 p.m. first pitch.
“We’ve got games every day the rest of the week and that’s going to extend
our pitching staff again,” Campbell said. “We got some guys a little rest
too.”
